June 2016 update

It has been an amazing season for Independence and her crew.  We have been very busy taking lots of great people sailing around St. John and some of our lovely little cays.  Lots of turtles and sting rays have been spotted and quite a few people that never snorkeled before are now addicted to a new sport thanks to several great mates that have been aboard this season.  Thank you Andy, Will and now Travis. Life in the islands slows down a bit in June and July but the sailing is great, the anchorages not so crowded and the water a little warmer but just as clear and the snorkeling is still wonderful.  We will be sailing into August when we will put Independence into the boat yard for annual maintenance.  Still plenty of time to come on down and enjoy a day on the water with us!

Life is very good for the crew of Independence.  The new web site is attracting attention and inquiries and there is nothing that we like more then taking folks sailing!

Our daughter and the grandkids are here for the summer, we will get over to Christmas Cove for pizza on the pizza boat a few times.  The mainland has food trucks, we have a food boat anchored in one of the best places to snorkel and see turtles and work up an appetite!

We will be off island from July 14th until the 22nd and then we will be closing down for the off season on August tenth.  Independence will be in the boatyard for a couple of months for annual maintenance.  We are starting to get requests for next season  and  she will be ready and looking her best again come the beginning of November.

We have had so many great families out lately, I am impressed with all the kids, even little ones, who are up to try snorkeling.  The water is a little warmer and the turtles have been out in numbers so maybe that has helped.  Andy has all the great places to find undersea treasures, just lately he has been guiding folks to the remora at Scot Beach with the bent spine, she (think it's a she but who can tell!) seems to get around just fine but it is such a treat to hear about the adventure of seeing an almost shark, they are several feet long which seems big enough to be a shark when you are only six!

We are booked now through the end of August, actually taking about ten days to go sailing with my husband, and then we go in to the boat yard for annual maintenance.  We are starting to get bookings for next season and if you are coming over the Christmas holidays and want to go sailing it isn't too early to set up a date.

I am looking forward to getting stuck into some projects on the boat, the varnish needs tending to and we have a list but Independence will be up and ready for a busy season come November 1st.  One thing for sure, we may look forward to haul out but we REALLY look forward to launch day and getting back out sailing.

Enjoy the rest of summer and we hope you will come sailing with Andy and I anytime after November 1st!

Today, June 1st, 2015, is the launch date for the new Independence web site.  Hope you like it!

We had a great season, lots of wonderful guests, beautiful sailing and tons of fun.  Now things are slowing down a bit, the wind has mellowed, a bit more south and a little warmer which makes for longer lazy snorkels and the turtles are out in force.  Independence will be sailing for the summer, sometimes we sail north to explore the wonders of Target, West Marine and Stateside grocery stores but not this year. So, it is off season, not so many cruise ships and hotel rates are down, a great time to think of a trip to the islands, come on down and let's go sailing on Independence.

We are out of the boat yard, three cheers for that!!  We did get a lot of projects competed on Independence and she is looking pretty darn good, if I do say so myself.  The non skid on the deck has been redone and is very non slippery and looks great, varnish and cockpit redone, new marine toilet (we call it a head) installed, bottom painted and on and on the list goes.  We also rerigged the mizzen and have a new sail for that, so, all systems are go and the crew is so happy to be back sailing again.  We have a new and improved meeting place as well. Now our guests can go to American Yacht Harbour, walk on to the dock by the Marina Office and hang a left, we will be on the face dock between Docks A and B.  The marina is upgrading our area and providing ladders so boarding and disembarking will be easier then ever.

Hurricane season has been kind to the Virgin Islands so far this year and we have had enough rain to turn St. Thomas and St. John green again, the donkeys at Caneel Bay are so happy, lots of grazing for them!  We are starting to get lots of inquiries and bookings for the season, exciting for Andy and I and we hope you will come on down and join us for full or half day sail on Independence

Independence did her last charter for this season on August 30th, thank you Hernandez family for a great day, so glad that Travis could find you an octopus, several turtles and that the donkeys showed up at Scot Beach to say good bye! We took the boat around to the boat yard the next day and she is now high and dry, out for maintenance and a well earned vacation for the crew in October.  We have a long list of projects which we have already started on so Independence will be looking her best cosmetically and performing as reliably as ever mechanically.  Our big splurge this year is a new mainsail, the sailmaker will take care of that and I will make it a new cover to protect it from the sun and ensure a long life for it.  We plan to launch on November 7th and our first charter for the new season is booked for November 10th, already looking forward to that.  Travis has signed on for another year so the turtle whisperer will be back!  Let me know if I can answer any questions about our trips and I hope we can take you sailing!
